Manchester City's Last Champions League Final

With two more days to go before Manchester City plays their second Champions League final, it’s time to look back at their first attempt to get European silverware. Manchester City last played in the Champions League final in 2021. They faced Chelsea at the Estádio do Dragão in Porto, Portugal. The match was a close affair, with both teams creating chances. However, it was Chelsea who came out on top, winning 1-0 thanks to a goal from Kai Havertz.

Disappointing performance

City's performance in the final was disappointing, as they had been one of the best teams in Europe all season. They had won the Premier League title and reached the semi-finals of the FA Cup. However, they were unable to find their best form on the biggest stage. The defeat to Chelsea was a blow to City's hopes of winning the Champions League. They have now reached the final twice, but have never been able to lift the trophy. They will be hoping to go one step further next season and finally win the competition. What went wrong for City in the final?

There were a number of factors that contributed to City's defeat in the Champions League final. One of the biggest problems was their lack of creativity in midfield. Kevin De Bruyne left the pitch with an injury after an hour. Manchester City struggled to create chances without him. They also had problems at the back, as they were unable to deal with Chelsea's attacks. Another factor that contributed to City's defeat was their poor finishing. They had a number of chances to score, but they were unable to take them. This was a major disappointment, as City had been one of the most prolific teams in Europe all season.

What can City do to improve for next season?

Pep Guardiola has been overthinking things in the Champions League in crucial games. Every time he adapted to the opponent; things went wrong. If we learned 1 thing from this season, it is that Manchester City is an amazing footballing machine. The biggest chance they have to win something, is to play their own game. Don’t adapt to Inter Milan, just do what Man City does the entire season.
