Both Champions League semi-finals have been played so we now know which teams will prepare themselves for the biggest match of their season. Manchester City was the first team to qualify for the final on Tuesday. On Wednesday Chelsea managed to fight off getting into their first final since winning the trophy in 2012.
Manchester City versus Paris Saint-Germain
The Cityzens were the team with the best position for the return legs of the semi-finals, after beating PSG in Paris with 1-2. Early in the second leg Paris Saint-Germain was awarded a penalty, but a VAR interference turned this decision back around. Not much later Riyad Mahrez opened the score in Manchester. A goal that didn’t really changed PSG’s perspective, since they still needed to score two goals. The French side tried to open Man City’s defence, but they were rock solid. The partnership between John Stones and Ruben Dias really brings out the best in both centre-backs. Paris Saint-Germain failed time on time to break them down. A perfectly placed counterattack ended in the net via once again Mahrez. The Algerian scored 3 out of Man City’s 4 goals in the semi-final. Which brings them into their first ever Champions League final.
Chelsea versus Real Madrid
With a 1-1 draw in the away match, there was still everything to play for on Wednesday evening. During this match it was clear that Chelsea was the better team. Timo Werner opened the scored around the half hour mark and there were no signs that Real Madrid was able to get one back. The Spanish side was very poor in this match and completely dominated by Thomas Tuchel’s side. The German manager who completely turned around Chelsea’s fortune after taking over from Frank Lampard. Mason Mount’s goal in the 85th minute sealed the deal for the Blues. They are through to the final to face Manchester City.
