Exciting Premier League final caused joy and drama

The final day of the English Premier League season caused both joy and drama. As we talked about in earlier articles, both the top 4 and relegation race were still open. Now the dust has settled, it’s time to look at the winners and losers of gameweek 38!

Gameweek 38 winners

Manchester United and Chelsea are two winners at the top of the table. Both teams were in a fierce battle for a Champions League ticket with Leicester City. Chelsea played at home against Wolverhampton and scored two goals late in the first half. These goals decided the match in their favour. A result in this match was enough for the Blues to finish in the top 4, since Man United and Leicester City played each other. This match was equal for a very long time, until Man United got rewarded a penalty. Bruno Fernandes netted the penalty to put Man United 1-0 ahead of Leicester. Now Leicester needed to score two goals to get back into the top 4. Instead of scoring, Leicester’s goalkeeper gave the ball to Jesse Lingard in the last minute of the match. Lingard took this opportunity to score his first goal in the dying second of the season, giving Man United the third spot on the table.

On the bottom of the table the fight against relegation was a very exciting one. Aston Villa was the team that came out on top in the end.

Gameweek 38 losers

Everywhere there are winners, there are always teams that lost something. Leicester City is the obvious one at the top of the table. After being in the top four for almost the entire season, Leicester City dropped out based on the results in the last two gameweeks. Now they will play in the Europa League next season.

Bournemouth did everything they can to to get out of the relegation zone. They convincingly beat Everton, but that wasn’t enough to stay in the Premier League. This means Eddie Howe’s team goes back into the Championship. The same goes for Watford. After spending quite some years in the Premier League, Watford is relegated after losing against Arsenal. Having four managers during the season, didn’t had the result they were looking for.
