The UEFA has some strict rules when it goes about the dealings from clubs who are eligible to play European football. Financial Fair Play (FFP) is one of the most important rules for clubs to follow. Spiegel International published a numbers of article back in 2018, which shows that the club has been playing fast and loose when it came to FFP. Now, two years later, the UEFA announced some heavy punishments for the Cityzens. Manchester City is banned from European football for the seasons 2020-21 and 2021-22 and they’ve got a 30 million euros fine.
It’s the second time they got a fine by UEFA, but the two-year ban from European football is new. This punishment can be crucial for Man City. Pep Guardiola always said he wants to win the Champions League again, if he can’t play European football with Manchester City, he might leave the club. The same goes for their players. Top quality players like Kevin de Bruyne, Sergio Aguero and Raheem Sterling belong to the best players in the World. They want to play against the best teams in Europe. Not playing European football would also be a big financial blow. The club will miss out of the money they normally get for playing in the Champions League.
Manchester City’s owner Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed al Nahyan already announced they will appeal the ban. In an interview he said: “I’m not surprised by the ban, but I am disappointed.” A decision has to be reached before July 15 so England’s representation can be submitted for Europe’s two club competitions. The process could be expedited but if City lose they will almost certainly fight on by any means necessary. City’s punishment could be postponed pending a final outcome.
