The Champions League round of 16 matches have been made and there are some huge fixtures. The European champions, Liverpool, have been drawn against Atletico Madrid which is quite a tough draw. Atletico are not having the best of seasons but Simeone’s men are known to be one of the best defenses in Europe and Liverpool could struggle to break them down. Here is the full list of matches:
- Borussia Dortmund vs Paris Saint-Germain
- Real Madrid vs Man City
- Atalanta vs Valencia
- Atletico Madrid vs Liverpool
- Chelsea vs Bayern Munich
- Lyon vs Juventus
- Tottenham vs RB Leipzig
- Napoli vs Barcelona
Manchester City got the other Madrid club, Real which is a tricky fixture. Guardiola will be facing his old rival team however; a lot has changed since his days in charge of Barca and this is a different side than the one he had a lot of success over.
Dortmund have a tricky test after finishing second in their group as they gave to face PSG. Tuchel will also go back to his old stomping ground which will be interesting to see how he fares there.
Atalanta and Valencia will both be very happy with their draw because they both have a chance of making it to the quarter-final of the competition. Atalanta have reached the knockout stages for the first time in their history and probably got the “easiest” first-place team in the tournament.
Chelsea will face Bayern in a repeat of the 2012 final in which Lampard played in. This time his team will be hoping that Bayern’s varying form will continue into February and that they can beat them again to make it to their first Champions League quarter-final since 2014.
Juventus were given a favourable draw when they were paired with Lyon. Lyon are in even more trouble now that their star player, Depay, has been ruled out for the season. This is a step forward for Juventus in their quest to win the Champions League.
Tottenham will also be relatively pleased with their draw against RB Leipzig as they could have been paired which much bigger European giants. Mourinho will definitely be happy with the draw and confident his side can get through.
Lastly Barcelona have been paired with Napoli in a match that they should win on paper but could prove to be trickier than expected. Liverpool have played Napoli twice and only came away with one point. Napoli are going through a bit of turmoil as they fired Ancelotti and replaced him with Gattuso but will be hoping to gain some more form by February.
The first round of the first leg matches starts on the 18th of February, with the final match of the second leg’s being played one month later on the 18th of March.
